Kitchen Counter/Dining Table Combos
Multifunctional kitchen spaces are becoming more and more popular in 2023. Since space is limited having separate spaces for cooking, dining, and socializing is not always possible. Combining the kitchen counter and dining table into one multifunctional piece of furniture just makes sense. Small apartments now come with dining tables built into kitchen islands and galley kitchens feature long bar tables with stools. The kitchen counter and dining table combo is becoming a standard layout for small kitchens and I love it! This trend is becoming increasingly popular as more people embrace the idea of multifunctional furniture and flexible living spaces.
Modular And Customizable Design
With small spaces, it’s important to make the most out of every inch of space available. In 2023, we may see more modular and customizable designs that allow homeowners to create a space that fits their unique needs. This could include modular furniture that can be easily reconfigured, customizable storage solutions, and adaptable room dividers.
Compact Appliances Are Becoming Standard
As more people embrace small-space living, appliance manufacturers are developing smaller, more efficient appliances that are better suited for these spaces. In 2023, we may see an increase in small space designs that incorporate compact appliances, such as mini-fridges, compact ovens, and space-saving washer/dryer combos.
Smart Home Technology
With the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart home technology is becoming more accessible and affordable. In 2023, we may see an increase in small space designs that incorporate smart home features, such as voice-controlled lighting and temperature, automated blinds, and smart appliances like refrigerators that can create recipes based on the ingredients inside! Umm…What?!
Multi-functional Appliances Are Taking Over

With limited space, it’s important to make the most out of every appliance in your home. Multifunctional appliances, such as a combination microwave and convection oven or a refrigerator with a built-in coffee maker, can save space and reduce clutter in small living quarters. Not only do these appliances serve multiple purposes, but they can also be more energy-efficient and cost-effective than having multiple separate appliances. With their practicality and space-saving features, multifunctional appliances are definitely a trend to that will grow in 2023.
Bold Accents Are Becoming The Norm
While minimalism is a popular trend in small-space design, this year we’re seeing more homeowners opting for a bolder, more expressive style. In 2023, we may see an increase in small space designs that incorporate bold accents, such as brightly colored walls, bold patterns, and statement lighting fixtures. These accents can help add personality and character to a small space, making it feel more unique and welcoming. See how to make dark, moody paint colors work in small rooms here.
Sustainable Design
As more people become concerned about the environment, sustainable design is gaining popularity in small spaces in 2023. This could include using eco-friendly materials, incorporating energy-efficient features, and designing spaces that are optimized for natural light and ventilation.
Biophilic Design

Biophilic design is all about bringing nature into interior spaces. In small spaces, incorporating natural elements such as plants, natural materials, and views of the outdoors can help create a more open and calming environment. In 2023, we may see more small space designs that incorporate biophilic elements, such as living walls, natural wood finishes, and large windows.
Whether you’re into design trends are not we can all agree that the small-space design world is changing, and there is a lot more to look forward to this year. Technology and sustainability seem to be leading the way for small-space living and I for one can’t wait to see what’s next!
